Love Jo

What a pleasant surprise - sweet! I received the fragrance discovery collection by Jo Loves (by the infamous Jo Malone CBE, who created one of the world's most sought after luxury fragrance brands eponymous with her name). It contains 12 vials (one for each month in a year, eh?) of her famous scents, plus 2 bonus vials (Golden Gardenia and Red Truffle 21) - I am spoilt for choice! I'm pleasantly surprised that you (you know who you are!) were paying attention to random things I said! Thank you for the birthday present - I love it ❤.

I must confess that I've actually moved on to using organic essential oils in recent years, but would be more than happy to give these a whiff, one vial at a time, coz I am inspired by how her dyslexia shaped her life and her art of fragrance (unique approach to her passion), why she decided to sell Jo Malone to Estee Lauder, as well as her battle with breast cancer.

1. Golden Gardenia (2011): It is a bold, creamy floral blanketed in suede cardamom, smoky incense and soft Elemi and Grey woods. It is a perfect balance of delicate petals and vibrant spices. It has a huge personality and a performance to match.

  • Top notes: Gardenia, and Bergamot
  • Heart notes: Gardenia, Jasmine Sambac, Ylang-ylang. Narcissus, and Coumarin
  • Base notes: Musk, and Heliotrope

What Jo said, "Creative worlds that collide in fragrance have always fascinated and motivated me to create. I have channeled the defining moments of my life into an unforgettable fragrance with strength, integrity, and creativity. It celebrates the many facets of what makes us unique. It is the timeless confidence we exude from staying true to ourselves and bringing our best to whatever we do. You find your best self among the strength of others and delight in that freedom. The heady petals of Gardenia, strong and pure, and the golden pinstripes of spice and woods, bring edge and a vibrant surprise to a classic note."

2. Green Orange & Coriander (2011): A harmonious blend of bitter green Citrus and Culinary Herbs, creating an incredibly warm, delicate, and soulful fragrance. Delightful - remains fresh, clean, and easy to wear!

  • Top notes: Bitter Green Orange, and Black Pepper
  • Heart notes: Coriander Seed and Leaf
  • Base notes: Oakmoss, and Tonka Bean

What Jo said, "It was inspired by an afternoon in New York. With just a spritz, I'm reminded of Sunday brunch, wrapped up in cashmere sweater, enjoying a glass of smooth red wine in front of a crackling log fire."

3. Pomelo (2011): A versatile, all-round scent that is a bright, zesty affair, ideal if you want to smell ultra clean, and fresh.

  • Top notes: Pomelo Zest
  • Heart notes: Vetiver, and Clove
  • Base notes: Patchouli, and Suede

What Jo said, "Inspired by memories of summer holidays, white sandy beaches, fresh linen sheets, and sparkling ice water, I surround myself with Pomelo wherever I go. This mouth-watering grapefruit-infused citrus is sharp, refreshing, and instantly energising. It is the fragrance that causes people to stop me in the street and ask what I am wearing. "

4. Mango Thai Lime (2012): A fresh, citrusy note - an aromatic gourmet fragrance inspired by the culinary delights of Thailand. Easy to wear, with a delicious hint of the Far East - mmm yum!

  • Top notes: Golden Mango, Lime, and Black Pepper
  • Heart notes: Mint Leaves, and Freesia
  • Base notes: Vetiver, and Thyme

What Jo said, "I love breaking the rules of fragrance and this mouth-watering combination is a celebration of Thailand's most vibrant culinary flavours. Taking inspiration from Thailand, ripe golden Mango is served with Lime and Black Pepper to create an explosive combination of sweet, sharp, and zesty flavours."

5. Pink Vetiver (2012): This fragrance strikes an intriguing warmth that will have you chasing the next spritz. This intoxicating cocktail of crushed pink peppercorns, cardamom, and cumin injects spicy heat, and radiates a sensuality as well as depth that complements the earthy vetiver notes. Bold, spicy, and seductive - an enticing aroma.

  • Top notes: Crushed Pink Peppercorns, Juniper Berries, and Cardamom
  • Heart notes: Cumin, Nutmeg, Ginger, and Angelica
  • Base notes: Vetiver, and Amber

What Jo said, "I've made Pink Vetiver totally unpredictable and instantly addictive by adding crushed pink peppercorns to inject a shot of intensity, depth, and vibrancy. Inspired by the scent memories of a tucked-away hotel in Florence, a spice market in Grasse, and the cosiness of time spent at home (my father''s crisp white shirts), to reinvent vetiver as a clean, and contemporary new classic."

6. No. 42 The Flower Shop (2013): Effortless sophistication, natural and pleasing. You can smell the stunning bouquet of fresh, fragrant blooms, and crushed Green Leaves for flower lovers everywhere. Effortlessly bottling the scent of a flower shop with all its delightful blooms.

7. Shards of Cedar & Red Thyme (2014): Be swept away by the magnetic charm of this bold, seductive, masculine scent that is aromatic, and woody, with a sophisticated feel that suits day and night. This intoxicating fragrance combines rich spices with herbal lavender, and woody thyme. Spicy, and clean in the opening notes, it becomes greener, woodier, and more aromatic as it develops.

  • Top notes: Bergamot, and Crushed Aromatic Spices
  • Heart notes: Vetiver, and Red Thyme
  • Base notes: Wild Lavender

What Jo said, "With just one spritz and from the second it settles onto skin, this immediately conjures up 'that' moment when someone walks past you wearing the most beautiful cologne, so intoxicating that you stop and turn your head."

8. Red Truffle 21 (2015): It is a celebration of Jo's success, blended 21 years after the opening of her first ever fragrance store in 1994. A confident and contemporary new classic scent - vibrant and harmonious, with aromatic, spicy notes that subtly linger sensuously against the skin!

  • Top notes: Black pepper, Fig leaf, Bergamot, and Mandarin
  • Heart notes: Pine leaves, Fig, and Juniper
  • Base notes: Vetiver, Truffle, and Patchouli

What Jo said, "I wanted to create an unexpected and totally unique new scent, unveiling the most beautiful truffle note surrounded by warm, earthy fig, bitter citrus and cool, crisp pine. Without a doubt, it is my most exciting and daring fragrance to date! It has taken me a long time to get exactly the right balance of truffle. By sitting it alongside fresh fig, bitter citrus, vetiver and pine, I have achieved vibrancy and harmony, whilst ensuring that truffle is always present. If you love to scent layer fragrances to create your own bespoke combination, I would recommend combining Red Truffle 21 with Cobalt Patchouli & Cedar or Pink Vetiver."

9. White Rose & Lemon Leaves (2015): A beautifully fragrant rose absolute, laced with crushed green lemon leaves, gently resting on a bed of wafer thin cedarwood, that is perfectly balanced. It is inspired by love, celebration, and remembering some of life's most treasured moments. Incredibly dreamy to wear, and manages to be both calming and emotionally uplifting at the same time.

Fresh, clean, and elegant, this scent has a unique depth of character that increases as it warms, literally blooming as it settles on the skin."

10. Smoked Plum & Leather (2016): A glamorous, and classy offering that is well worth getting dressed up for the evening outing. The warmth of the sweet plum liquor, and crushed cinnamon, infused with smoked cedarwood and and soft, warm leather are cosy and comforting.

What Jo said, "I love riding horses in Montana each year, and have bottled so many incredible scents; from the heat of the sun as it hits the saddle, to the smoke which signals the end of each day. This warm, earthy, and sophisticated fragrance instantly brings those moments to life."

11. Jo (2018): Jo Malone drew on her own travels and passion for sparkling citrusy scents to create this signature scent. It is inspired by the excitement and expectation of adventures that evoke memories of time spent with family, reminiscent of a day at the beach during summer holidays. What Jo said, "Over the last 25 years, I have created fragrances for all kinds of reasons, but this one I created for myself. Grapefruit has always been a source of inspiration - from the first bottle of cologne I smelt in Paris over 30 years ago, to the treasured moments of building my second business. This fresh and full-bodied fragrance encapsulates sparkling notes of Grapefruit, Bitter Orange, Lime, and Spearmint sitting on a bed of powerful Guaiac Wood, Cedarwood, and Vetiver with a lingering ribbon of Hedione, and Black Pepper."

12. Orange Butterflies (2018): A sweet, sharp, and invigorating masterpiece. A crowd-pleasing daytime, bright and cheerful feminine fragrance that is fresh, welcoming, and puts a spring in your step.

  • Top notes: Mandarin Orange, and Petitgrain
  • Heart notes: Orange Blossoms
  • Base notes: Neroli

What Jo said, "It tells the story of my love of Orange Blossoms. Imagine yourself sitting in the south of France - it is early morning, already the sun is up, and warming the day. The scent of Orange Blossoms, Petitgrain, and Neroli ranges heavily in the air. A kaleidoscopic milieu of orange, bronze, gold, and amber butterflies suddenly take flight, their collective flutter disrupting the blossom scent, which fills the air all around you - a floral symphony begins."

13. Rose Petal 25 (2019): A modern yet timeless take on this beautiful flower, this scent weaves notes of powerful Rose Absolute and elegant Rose de Mai with complex, and ever changing Ambrette, to create a delicate, intoxicating fragrance that leaves a luminous trail, lingering long after the wearer has left the room.

To look up and allow myself to dream really big again. It is all about the blue-sky moment, looking up towards our dreams, and celebrating limitless opportunities. This scent is full of vibrancy, enthusiasm, and expectation. It captures a series of notes that tell stories of the happy, care-free moments that will return - powerful base notes gives this fragrance a unique intensity, while the classic notes of vetiver, patchouli, and cedar wood take on an eclectic twist."

Best Friend

It is true what they say, that talking to your best friend is sometimes all the therapy you need. I understand what you don't say (when you were at loss for words), know exactly what you feel (how naturally vulnerable and open you were with me), and see the pain in your eyes (even if you tried to hide your true emotions behind that meek smile, head thrown back, and arms in the air - your distinct mannerism that I've come to know so well). I'm glad I could be there in your greatest time of need - to give you a listening ear, a comforting word, and just be present, as you grappled to cope with your recent immense loss.

On hindsight, they say, "You don't know what love is until you fall in love with your best friend". I was lucky to have experienced that! We accepted each other, with all our flaws and quirks, and loved each other just the way we were, even at our most irritable. Oh how young we were then!

Songs from "Cracked Rear View" album by Hootie & The Blowfish (one of your favourite bands) are playing in my head - "Only wanna be with you" and "Hold my hand" during our budding romance and "Let her cry" when I ended things (which was painful coz I feared losing you forever, but I needed to be true to myself first and foremost).

I allowed you to take a chance at love but you have since come to terms that we are better off as best friends instead. I knew then (made you promise that should things not work out, we will remain best friends still) and I know now that our friendship will last a lifetime. There is no denying this fact!

How apt - today is your birthday and tomorrow is "International Friendship Day". I'm grateful to God for the opportunity to reconnect. When I pray and count my blessings, I count you twice coz you matter a great deal to me (when you are happy, I am happy). Have a blast on your birthday, Yaz. May you be blessed with only the best! Till then, take good care of yourself for me.

I'll end my post with Bon Jovi's "Thank you for loving me" and an extract of its lyrics. You're welcome ❤.

"Thank you for loving me. For being my eyes when I couldn't see. For parting my lips when I couldn't breathe... You pick me up when I fall down. You ring the bell before they count me out. If I was drowning, you would part the sea. And risk your own life to rescue me. Thank you..."

Hooked

Have you instinctively had that undeniable feeling in your gut with a certain someone? How it happened naturally due to the instant connection (kismet or serendipity?). Interestingly, there is nothing you can do to build a connection. It can neither be created nor be destroyed - it is either there or not. You can be apart for years, then reunite and still have that amazing connection, things just fall into place, the conversations just flow as it did before.

You can be compatible with many people but you only feel the genuine connection with one or a few (and you cannot explain it, mind-boggling, right?). I was advised by the wise - just be open to the experience and see where it leads you to. What have you got to lose? I'll end my post with the song, "Hooked on a feeling" and an extract of its lyrics.

"I can't stop this feeling deep inside of me. Girl, you just don't realize what you do to me. When you hold me in your arms so tight. You let me know everything's all right.  I, I'm hooked on a feeling. I'm high on believing that you're in love with me. I've got it bad for you, darling. But I don't need a cure. I'll just stay addicted and hope I can endure."

Companionship

A true friend is the one who brings us closer to Allah's compassion and grace.

Prophet Muhammad (ï·º) said, "The believer is like a mirror to other believers (in truthfulness)." Like a mirror, your friend gives you an honest depiction of you. He/She forgives your mistakes, but does not hide or exaggerate your strengths and weaknesses.

Sayyidina Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: "A friend cannot be considered a friend unless he/she is tested on three occasions: in time of need, behind your back and after your death."

When asked, "What person can be the best friend?", RasululLah (ï·º) counselled, "He who helps you remember Allah (ï·»), and reminds you when you forget Him".

Imam Jafar As-Sadiq (رَØِÙ…َÙ‡ُ ٱللَّٰÙ‡ُ) remarked, "My best friend is the one who gifts me my weaknesses and shortcomings" - the one who brings to your notice your defects and flaws so you'll improve and be the best version of yourself before your final return to Allah (ï·»), attaining His redha (pleasure).

Just Because

Wanted to share one of my favourite songs, the soundtrack from the movie, "Chances are" (1989) starring 'Iron Man'. Wanted to share this, just because... ❤

"Well, here we are again. I guess it must be fate. We've tried it on our own, but deep inside we've known we'd be back to set things straight... Every memory repeats. Every step I take retreats. Every journey always brings me back to you. After all the stops and starts, we keep coming back to these two hearts. Two angels who've been rescued from the fall. After all that we've been through, it all comes down to me and you. I guess it is meant to be, forever you and me, after all."

Hugs

Thank you for the quick catch up, JR. I understood what you are going through because I know you are not interested in politics or engaging toxic people, which can be counter productive and unhealthy. You just want to do good work. I will help you look for possible opportunities. Catch up again after your return from your Japan trip - you need the break to de-stress and get your mind off work! Thank you too for the soursop leaves! So sweet of you - I feel blessed ❤
